It is now widely recognized the central role that T cells play in the development of autoimmune diseases. However, in order for T cells to become “pathogenic” they need to go through the process of activation and polarization (induction stage) followed by recruitment of activated/effector T cells to various tissues where these cells trigger a series of events leading up to the chronic inflammation and disease (effector stage). In our laboratory we are interested in understanding the contribution of various T cell-associated and endothelial cell-associated adhesion molecules to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Our laboratory uses a number of animal models of IBD including T cell transfer, DSS, and IL-10-deficient and RA including collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and TNFΔARE.
We are also interested in better understanding the contribution of myeloid cells (e.g. neutrophils, monocytes and macrophages) to the disease development. We have recently discovered that these cells can influence T cell proliferation and cytokine production, which suggests an unappreciated role that these cells may play in pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. We are currently looking at the mechanisms how myeloid cells can alter various aspects of T cell functions as well as their role in chronic pathological processes.

Techniques currently used in the laboratory: animal breeding and genotyping, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, flow cytometric analysis, multiplex and ELISA cytokine analysis, small animal surgeries, adoptive cell transfer, in vivo animal models, bone-marrow chimeras, real-time and regular PCR, primary cell culture.
