The field of bio-inspired nanomaterial synthesis seeks to use organic and inorganic chemical synthesis to develop nanostructured materials that mimic biological materials and constructs. An example of a synthetic bio-inspired nanomaterial would be a mechanically tough hydrogel that can repeatedly withstand compressive loads, or a material synthesized to resemble spider silk on a molecular level.
