Weigert's elastic stain is a combination of basic fuchsin, resorcin, ferric chloride, water and alcohol. It is used to stain elastic fibers in histological examinations. Often it is followed by a counterstaining of cell nuclei with iron hematoxlyn stain. When the stained specimen is viewed under light microscope, elastic fibers appear blue-black, collagen appears red, nuclei are stained blue whereas cytoplasm appears yellow.
