Toluidine blue is a basic metachromatic dye commonly used for histological staining procedures. It has high affinity for acidic components of tissues and therefore stains tissues rich in DNA and RNA. It is used in tissue sections to highlight components such as cartilage, mucins and mast cell granules. The tissues stain purple to red wheras the background stains blue.
