Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)
Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is an analytical technique used to separate non-volatile mixtures. A plate of inert material such as glass is coated with a thin layer of solid such as alumina or silica. The sample mixture is spotted at the base and the plate is placed in a closed chamber containing solvent below the spotted sample. The components of the mixture are separated as they ascend the plate by capillary action based on their relative affinity to mobile and stationary phase. It is commonly used to analyze the progress of a reaction by studying its components and to separate reaction intermediates. (Credit: Muhammad Atif Khan)
