Surface profiling is a method of assessing the roughness of a given surface by measuring the profile of a sample. Contact methods analyze surfaces by using a stylus (contact profilometry) or by using optical techniques such as laser triangulation, confocal microscopy, low coherence interferometry and digital holography. Profilometry can be used to assess the quality of a surface finish. (Credit: Courtney Fox)
