Primary cell culture refers to cells that are taken directly from an in vivo source and cultured. Tumorogenic and normal tissue can be cultivated this way. Primary cells cannot be maintained indefinitely; after a certain number of passages (known as the Hayflick limit), the cells will senesce and die. Individual cells can be isolated and cultured, as can larger pieces of tissue.
