A combination of three different stains in precise amounts used in the correct order can reveal histological structures with selective detail that would otherwise not be possible. Mallory's trichrome stain method is a modified protocol of Masson's trichrome stain which uses acid fuchsine followed by a solution containing PTA, orange G and aniline blue. This results in dark red nuclei, orange erythrocytes, and blue collagen fibres, cartilage matrix and mucus. This stain is common in kidney and liver biopsies in medical pathology laboratories.
