Liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS) combines the separation power of liquid chromatography with mass resolving capability of quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Sample constituents are first separated in the liquid chromatography column based on their relative affinity with stationary and mobile phase, and then transferred to the mass spectrometer where the quadrupole acts as a mass filter. Particles move through the time-of-flight tube according to their mass-to-charge ratios and are detected to produce a mass spectrum characterizing the relative abundance and mass-to-charge ratios of each sample component. This is compared to stored references to identify constituents in sample. It provides accurate mass measurements and its high resolving power enables high selectivity and identification of compounds.
