Liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-QQQ MS) combines the separation capabilities of liquid chromatography with mass analysis power of a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. Sample is loaded in the liquid chromatography instrument where its constituents are separated on the basis of their relative affinity to the stationary and mobile phase. Upon elution, the components are automatically loaded in the quadrupole mass spectrometer, which is a tandem mass spectrometer with two mass-resolving quadrupole mass spectrometers separated by a non-mass-resolving quadrupole. The components are ionized and filtered as they pass through these quadrupoles according to their mass-to-charge ratios and are detected to give a mass spectrum characterizing their relative abundance and mass-to-charge ratios. The data produced is searched against reference databases to identify compounds in the sample. LC-QQQ MS has a wide variety of applications including its uses in environmental monitoring and food safety analysis, forensic investigation and clinical research. (Credit: Muhammad Atif Khan)
