The genomic or chromosomal DNA is collected with genomic DNA extraction. This is in contrast with the collection of extrachromosomal DNA such as plasmids. Genomic DNA may be extracted from a wide variety of samples (environmental, forensics, clinical, etc.) and used in further analyses (sequencing, genotyping, genome studies, species identification, microbial community studies, disease diagnosis, PCR, etc.). Cells/viral capsids are lysed during the process and then treated to a series of centrifugation and wash steps that remove proteins, membranes, and RNA, thus, leaving behind the desired DNA.
