CyToF
Cytometry by Time-of-Flight (CyToF) addresses the limitations of traditional flow cytometry bound to a narrow window of wavelengths and the overlap between them using lasers that requires constant compensation. In CyToF, instead of fluorescent dyes, rare transition isotopes of elements with unique masses are used to label the antibodies and are easily recognized by the accompanying mass cytometer. After sorting, cells are atomized and ionized, the resulting ionic cloud information is captured by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer detector and analyzed. Use of time of flight mass spectrometry greatly expands the number of markers that can be simulatneouly examined in the same cell population. (Credit: Roshan Karki)
