Cell based assays encompass procedures directed towards understanding cellular functions such as proliferation, adhesion, viability, pathology and signaling pathways. After exposure to variables such as time, specific stimuli and/or altered microenvironment, cellular mechanisms such as growth, death, metabolism and function are studied as endpoints. Cellular mechanisms of action such as receptor binding and activation, signaling, ligand internalization and subcellular localization can also be assessed, leading to a greater understanding of cellular function in normal physiology and disease. Assay endpoints are usually imaging or spectrophotometric (both colorimetric and fluorescence)-based. Cell based assays offer the advantages of high-throughput, high-content analyses that can be greatly individualized, ultimately providing a larger, more integrated picture of cellular function based on its microenvironment.
