Veterinary Molecular Pathology Laboratory

Lansing, Michigan, US

The Veterinary Molecular Pathology Laboratory is part of the Anatomic Pathology Section, one of 11 service sections in the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH). The laboratory provides histopathology for domestic and laboratory animal tissues of both naturally occuring diseases and animal models. The laboratory is specialized in immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry and in-situ hybridization for cellular and infectious targets in both formalin fixed, paraffin embedded as well as frozen animal tissues. We also perform laser capture microdissection, tissue micro array (custom made for animal species or disease processes), slide scanning with morphometric evaluation as well as PCR for exon 8 and 11 ITD mutations in c-kit in dogs and exon 9 in cats on formalin fixed material. PARR is offered on formalin fixed material for cats and dogs based on published protocols using capillary gel... Show more »

We routinely run more than 500 antibodies for both IHC and ICC, please use pdf in the resources section for a list of the most commonly offered antibodies for routine diagnostic testing. The list focuses mainly on dogs and cats, a large repertoire for mouse antibodies is also available. For all other targets, please communicate with the laboratory. We routinely validate antibody tests for investigators on both domestic and laboratory animal species. Through a close collaboration with a human tumorpathology service, we have access to human control tissues and also perform IHC on human tissues for comparative studies. ISH is routinely run for numerous infectious targets and few cellular targets and the lab develops targeted probes for investigators. We use DNA oligo-probes that are DIG labeled and HPLC purified and have a standardized design protocol that allows us to go from probe design to execution within 4 weeks. The laboratory also provides service for GLP studies.
Dr. Kiupel is an ACVP board certified, PhD pathologist and the supervisor of the histology and IHC/ISH laboratory that employs 6 histology technicians and 3 students. The IHC laboratory is divided into four different laboratory rooms in the DCPAH: a 1,500 sq ft histology laboratory, a 300 sq ft IHC laboratory; and a 300 sq ft special procedures laboratory and a 200 sq ft imaging laboratory. Equipment pertinent to this proposal in these labs includes 3 Ventana Discovery autostainers (also used to run automated ISH) 2 Ventana BenchMark autostainers, an Arcturus PixCell II Laser Capture Microdissection Instrument with Fluorescence and PixCell II Image Archiving Workstation, 2 Leica autostainers, a Dako Plus autostainer/retrieval system, a Dako Artisan automated special stainer, an Aperio digital slide scanner, 2 Beecher tissue mircoarrayer, a Ventana Symphony automated HE stainer/coverslipper, a Leica automated stainer, a rotating diamond saw specially designed to trim soft tissue and bone simultaneously and diverse tissue processors and microtomes.
The DCPAH is a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory offering more than 800 tests . In the more than 30 years since its inception, DCPAH has become one of the country's premier veterinary diagnostic laboratories, handling more than 220,000 cases involving approximately 1.5 million tests annually. The lab complies with the latest standards in quality control and is accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD). All tests offered through the DCPAH follow the AAVLD essential requirements, including test validation. Standard operating procedures (SOPs) are in place for all test systems.
The Michigan State University DCPAH is an invaluable professional resource, making quality, trusted, and comprehensive veterinary diagnostics widely available. Income from the laboratory is reinvested in teaching, research, and outreach for the purpose of protecting human and animal welfare domestically and around the world.
