UCL IQPath (Institute of Neurology Queen Square Pathology) is a state of the art facility that performs histological and immunohistochemical techniques on research and diagnostic specimens. Our main expertise is mouse and human histology of the central nervous system, but we cut up, embed, section and stain any other tissue.
We are specialised on paraffin sectioning and all our antibodies are optimised for formalin fixed, paraffin embedded material.
Our team can process large quantities (sectioning of up to 100 paraffin blocks per day) and we have the equipment to carry out 150 immunostainings per day. We are offering a large repertoire of antibodies for paraffin sections, (more than 100 antibodies optimised for human and more than 50 antibodies optimised for murine targets). We can also digitise slides, store the data and make them accessible via web browser.
In addition to histological techniques, we advise on histological analysis, in particular of the brain, and the spinal cord, on specific request. The facility is led by Professor Sebastian Brandner, who has expertise in human neuropathology and mouse phenotyping, with particular focus on developmental abnormalities, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration.

Digital Pathology data slides can be stored on our secure file server for remote viewing. The quoted price refers to the cost of monthly storage.
Digital scanning of histology slides (LEICA SCN400F), storage of the data on a secure cloud server (UCL-IoN) and off-site viewing in any web browser (Slidepath Digital Image Hub).
Scanning of fluorescent slides is possible but technically challenging.
If you prefer to take the digital slide files (*.scn format) off site, we can transfer them via ftp or upload on a harddisk. Files are 0.5-3 GByte each. Offsite viewing is possible with a free LEICA client, but functionality is limited
The cost includes scanning and basic annotation.
Staining is done on an automated LEICA Autostainer for consistent results. Automated coverslipping is applied after the staining for consistent, high quality results.
We can analyse whole digital scans of bright field or fluorescent slides with a digital image analysis software, Definiens Tissue Studio and Definiens Developer. We can scan your histology slide or you can provide any type of digital pathology scans or Laser Scanning confocal images. This software is ideal for detection and quantification of biomarkers in cells and tissues. We can analyse slides using predefined algorithms in Definines Tissue Studio or we can develop new algorithms using the Definines Developer Software. To establish a new antibody that is not yet established in our lab, we charge £150 for the optimisation, or offer this for free if more than 50 slides are ordered
Standard processing and paraffin embedding in a LEICA TP300 Processor. Includes cutup ("grossing"), correct orientation according to the customers' needs, preparation and labelling of the wax block.
Our special expertise is the sectioning of central nervous tissue (Brain, spinal cord) but we can of course section any other tissue. The cost is for unstained sections. Sections are mounted on Superfrost plus glass slides and are labelled with a THERMO Label printer. 3D Barcodes optional if requested.
We can stain common special stains, such as PAS, Luxol fast blue, Congo red, EvG etc.
