About Turner Scientific, LLC

Turner Scientific is a preclinical contract research organization specializing in hearing and ototoxicity testing. We work with biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and general CROs, to assess the effects of their products on the ears. We detect potential toxic effects on hearing, tinnitus, and balance, and we evaluate the potential for drugs to improve auditory function. Specifically, we offer:

  • Electrophysiologic testing (auditory brainstem responses, or ABRs);

Hearing Loss Animal Models

Turner Scientific offers a wide variety of animal models and noise exposure models to test for ototoxicity and evaluate new therapeutic compounds for hearing loss/tinnitus. Animals models include multiple varieties of mice, rats, chinchillas, guinea pigs, minipigs, etc. Noise exposure models include sustained noise, blast/impact, noise and chemical combination, and anesthetized or unanesthetized exposure. Hearing loss indications that can be evaluated are noise-induced hearing loss, age-related hearing loss (presbycusis), hyperacusis, hidden hearing loss, and tinnitus.

Ototoxicity Evaluation

A variety of drug delivery models is available, including oral, IV, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, transtympanic, intratympanic, and round window application.

Animal Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential (BAEP) Studies

Electrophysiologic testing of auditory brainstem responses (ABR - also called BAEP) is a specialty of Turner Scientific. This can be done as part of an initial study design, or as a secondary evaluation after initial behavioral testing has been done to confirm the treatment effect of a compound. ABR testing measures neural activity from synchronized electrical responses of the brain in response to trains of tone clicks. The FDA has accepted ABR as a standard test of hearing in lab animals and humans. ABR testing is done both at our facility in Illinois, and remotely at the locations of our clients or general CROs.

Cytocochleogram

Cytocochleogram testing of auditory brainstem responses (ABR - also called BAEP) is a specialty of Turner Scientific. This can be done as part of an initial study design, or as a secondary evaluation after initial behavioral testing has been done to confirm the treatment effect of a compound. Cytocochleograms are microscopic evaluations of the cochlea that allow exact counting of hair cells and ribbon synapses using confocal laser microscopy. The FDA has accepted cytocochleograms as a standard test of ototoxicity in lab animals.

Turner Scientific evaluates sponsors' ear-related compounds for efficacy, toxicity, and distribution. In addition to efficacy testing listed elsewhere on our storefront, we also do cochlear fluid sampling to test drug concentration in the inner ear.

Drug Discovery & Development

Turner Scientific functions as an early R&D lab for biotech and pharmaceutical companies. We can rapidly, flexibly, and inexpensively screen new compounds for their early efficacy in treating hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular disorders. Compounds that are found to be efficacious can then be tested more thoroughly. We conduct both non-GLP studies at our facility, and GLP studies at the facilities of our GLP partners.

Contract Research

Turner Scientific conducts preclinical audiologic studies and ototoxicity studies on behalf of general preclinical CROs that do not ordinarily offer these services themselves. We act as a niche consultant, and work with the CRO's sponsor to design and execute the audiologic portion of the research. We can conduct our portion of the studies at the general CRO's facility and/or our facility in Illinois.

Regenerative medicine for hearing disorders is being evaluated by several biotech companies. Turner Scientific can help these sponsors determine the effects of their treatments on hearing and tinnitus, and evaluate the cellular changes relative to controls by counting hair cells and ribbon synapses using cytocochleograms.
