The Stem Cell Research Center is a resource for researchers at Sanford-Burnham and elsewhere who don't necessarily regard themselves as stem cell biologists but are increasingly turning to stem cell techniques to address questions in their own fields of study.

Center staff derive and characterize stem cells that model normal biology and disease states; derive induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from adult stem cells (typically fibroblasts, or skin cells); offer researchers instruction on techniques for developing iPSCs; act as consultants in designing and interpreting experiments; and develop sophisticated imaging technology, including automated 2D and 3D video time-lapse microscopy to image and track the migration, differentiation and cross-talk between human pluripotent cells and their progeny in culture.

The Bioinformatics Core Facility at Lake Nona offers informatics support for SBMRI investigators to explore, understand and analyze complex biological data at the system level. Our core is equipped with cutting-edge computational infrastructure and a selective collection of bioinformatics software. Bioinformatics experts are available to address your needs quickly and effectively, and are ready to apply sophisticated computational approaches for acquiring, managing, analyzing and integrating high-dimensional biological data. Our facility develops and implements algorithms, software and databases. We provide bioinformatics services in the fields ranging from functional genomics to translational researches. More specifically, our services include consultation, data analysis and management, software development, and accessing to large computing resources.

To meet various demands from the investigators, we provide services at multiple levels, from full service to cost-effective limited service as well as collaborative projects requiring longer-term commitment of time and effort.

Instrumentation: Small cluster, 51 compute node with 54 gigs of memory

Sanford-Burnham’s Protein Production Core offers state-of-the-art resources with advanced biochemical engineering and bioprocessing capabilities.

Specialized protein production scale-up services (65L bacterial or 25-50L insect/mammalian cell production) include optimization of production runs. Analytical services include measurement of protein-protein and protein-small molecule interactions using a variety of approaches such as surface plasmon resonance and isothermal titration calorimetry.

Assistance in experimental design and technical support are also provided by the Core’s knowledgeable staff.

Available cell lines: HEK293, Custom suspension CHO cells, Sf9 cells, e.coli BL21 and DH3

Instrumentation:
The instrumentation is distributed between several labs in our facility mainly to divide mammalian and microbial production suites and a purification and analysis labs. It consists of:
- 60 L pilot fermentation reactor
- 25 L Wave bioreactor (capacity is from 2-25L)
- AKTA FPLC system
- Shaker incubators
- CO2 shaker incubators
- Standard incubators
- MoFlo Astrios Cell Sorter
- AutoITC 200 calorimeter

The Stem Cell Core (SCC) at Sanford-Burnham provides scientists within the community the opportunity to conduct their research devoted to human stem cells and that is conducive to collaborative partnerships. The SCC staff has extensive experience in maintenance, characterization, and differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) and the generation of non-integrated hiPSC from skin fibroblasts and lymphocytes using episomal, modified mRNA, or Sendai viral method. The SCC provides researchers with a source of various embryonic stem cell lines and carries a wide variety of validated stem cell reagents for hESC/hiPSC culture that are available for purchase. Hands-on and individual ad hoc training courses on hESC maintenance, characterization, and hiPSC generation are available for investigators and scientists. Extensive equipment for growth and characterization of stem cells is available for use in the core.
