Whether it’s navigating the tax code, managing vendor relationships or calling on food retailers, the owners of RL Food Testing Laboratory have been there. We were once food manufacturers and have a first-hand understanding of the ins and outs of the business. We know how exciting (and a bit scary) starting a food business can be – especially given the uncertainty of the marketplace. We know that budgets can be tight and retailer’s deadlines even tighter. We also know what food retailers’ expectations are and how you can best prepare yourself and your company to sell to them. We know, because we lived it.
We realize that budgets can be tight for large food manufacturers as well as new start-up companies; that is why we offer the lowest prices available. We keep our overhead low, so our savings are passed on to you – our customers.
Not only does our management team have experience in the food business, but our laboratory team has two microbiological chemists on staff with over 30 combined years of experience in biochemistry, microbiology, food science and food R&D; and each member of our marketing team brings a wealth of knowledge with over 50 combined years of experience.
Food safety tests are done to ensure your product is edible using microbiological analysis. Depending on the ingredients in your recipe, we’ll recommend which microbes to test for. Some of the most common microbes tested for are:
We do not test for pathogens or food that has been intentionally contaminated. Food safety tests are done to prevent food poisoning outbreaks and so the food needs to be tested under normal conditions.
To conduct this analysis you would ship a sample of your food product to us and we will perform the test.
You will receive a report from our lab with your results and an interpretation of the report from our staff Microbiologist explaining your results.
When people call asking for allergen testing, they are usually uncertain as to whether the ingredients they are using have allergens present. This test determines if any known allergens are present. You will ship the product to us and we will perform the test.
You need to let us know which allergen for which you are testing for, as each test is a separate service. Here are the 8 most common food allergens (each is $200 per test).
If you are selling your food product in a retail environment; then your retailer will more than likely require a shelf life test. At some point, you should strongly consider getting shelf life testing to give your product a valid expiration date.
RL Food Testing Laboratory offers real time microbiological shelf life testing from as short as 5 days up to 1 year – depending on what shelf life expectancy you are trying to achieve.
Shelf life testing includes 6 test points that are measured in equal intervals depending on your ingredients. The following microbes will be tested during your shelf life testing service:
You will receive a report at the end of each testing point. If at any point during the shelf life testing, we will notify you if the bacterial counts greatly increase. Otherwise, we will provide updates at each shelf life testing interval.
You will receive your final report at the end of your shelf life testing service. Our staff microbiologist will write a report summarizing the results. No other labs offer this summary report and it is included as part of your shelf life testing service at no extra charge. The report is written in laymen’s terms to help you understand the laboratory results.
Sometimes Food Nutritional Analysis is needed to produce your nutrition facts labels. Occasionally, some clients would prefer not to disclose their proprietary recipe. How foods are processed can also require lab testing. For example, brined, marinated or brewed products often need lab testing. If your recipes cannot be analyzed through our database software, then you would send a sample to our lab for analysis.
Your results report shows the nutrient values required by the FDA for Nutrition Facts Labels. These include: Calcium, Calories from Fat, Total Calories, Total Carbohydrates, Cholesterol, Trans-fat, Saturated Fat, Total Fat, Dietary Fiber, Iron, Protein, Sodium, Sugars, Vitamin A, Vitamin C. (Ash and Moisture results are also included.) We use the information from your report to produce your FDA compliant Nutrition Facts Label.
