OGL's seafood identification service uses a DNA-based method (mCOI DNA barcoding) to identify, and to provide FDA acceptable market names, for seafood species contained in many types of seafood products and samples. This is the same method used by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for monitoring and enforcing accurate seafood labeling. This service is available to academic and industry clients as well as to the general public.

We analyze tissue, whole blood, and DNA samples, extract DNA from your samples, PCR-amplify the DNA barcode region (cytochrome oxidase I gene; COI), sequence the PCR products, and identify the results using the FDA References Standard Sequence Library for seafood identification. All laboratory tests are conducted blind and results are confidential. OGL will issue a simple report based on US FDA protocols and US FDA-acceptable market names.

1 sample = $100
13-24 samples = $1,206
25-47 samples = $1,824
48-94 samples = $3,325

Please contact us if you have more than 94 samples.

Turnaround time is approximately two weeks.
