Ocean Genome Legacy Center (www.northeastern.edu/ogl) is a non-profit marine research facility and biorepository located at Northeastern University. OGL is dedicated to exploring and preserving the wealth of information contained in the genes of marine organisms. Its mission is to acquire, authenticate, study, preserve, develop, and distribute genetic materials, biological specimens, information, technology, and standards needed to advance basic and applied non-commercial research. By providing secure storage and broad public access to genomic materials and a forum for sharing samples, data, and ideas, Ocean Genome Legacy aims to serve as a catalyst for research that can help to protect marine ecosystems and improve the human condition.

Species Identification of Seafood

OGL's seafood identification service uses a DNA-based method (mCOI DNA barcoding) to identify, and to provide FDA acceptable market names, for seafood species contained in many types of seafood products and samples. OGL's seafood identification service uses a DNA-based method (mCOI DNA barcoding) to identify, and to provide FDA acceptable market names, for seafood species contained in many types of seafood products and samples. This is the same method used by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for monitoring and enforcing accurate seafood labeling. This service is available to academic and industry clients as well as to the general public.

We analyze tissue, whole blood, and DNA samples, extract DNA from your samples, PCR-amplify the DNA barcode region (cytochrome oxidase I gene; COI), sequence the PCR products, and identify the results using the FDA References Standard Sequence Library for seafood identification. All laboratory tests are conducted blind and results are confidential. OGL will issue a simple report based on US FDA protocols and US FDA-acceptable market names.
