As Professor and Vice-Chairman of Neuroscience at the Chicago Medical School and Director of the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, Prof. Peterson maintains an active NIH-funded research program. For publication metrics, he currently has a citation count of 11,503, an h-index of 36, and an i10-index of 53.

Prof. Peterson is past-Chairman of the NIH Study Section, Neurogenesis and Cell Fate, past-President of the American Society for Neural Therapy and Repair, and serves on the Editorial Board of seven scientific journals. His experience in reviewing led him to organize a workshop in confocal microscopy and stereology that is offered annually in Chicago to help train scientists in the best practices in the use of these research tools. Recently, Prof. Peterson has begun offering on-site training to academic and commercial institutions to promote expertise in microscopy and stereology. This training is organized through NeuroRenew, Inc., which was founded by Prof. Peterson in 2003.
