The Nano Research Facility (NRF) at Washington University in St. Louis cultivates an open, shared research, and education environment that brings researchers across disciplines together, particularly in the emerging area of nanomaterials with applications in the energy, environment, and biomedical fields.

Analysis of particle size distribution using a Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS Dynamic Light Scattering system. Size distributions for particles between 0.2nm and 5um in size and suspended in liquid can be obtained. Sample temperature can be controlled from 4 degrees C to 80 degrees C and trending studies (time, temperature, concentration, pH, salinity) are possible.

All size results are for hydrodynamic radius; not recommended for samples with very large aspect ratios. The minimum sample volume required for analysis is 100uL for a water-based suspension and 1mL for a solvent-based suspension. The tool uses a 633nm laser and is not equipped with fluorescent filters, so is not recommended for samples that absorb at 633nm.

Surface characterization and imaging of biological and material samples using a FEI Nova NanoSEM 230 field emission scanning electron microscope. Spatial resolution at 15kV in high vacuum mode is about 1nm. Low vacuum mode reduces charging effects and can be used to image non-conductive samples or samples on a non-conductive substrate, such as a glass slide, without coating. Secondary and backscattered electron detection available.

Critical point drying and sputter coating are available for sample preparation if necessary or desired. No cryo stage available for frozen samples.
