The headspace vials are typically heated to drive partitioning of volatiles from the solid or liquid phase into the gas phase. Sample vials can be agitated during heating. Sampling of the headspace for GC/MS injection is usually performed via a heated gas-tight syringe.

Please submit samples in a sealed glass vial sealed with tape around the cap or with a crimped cap to seal in volatile organics for analysis.

Thermal Desorption GCMS encompasses two primary functions: sample collection/concentration and transfer to a detector. The use of adsorbents and large sample volumes to collect vapor phase compounds, (such as VOC's in air or residual components from solids), facilitates accurate analysis even when sample levels are very low.

Organics are concentrated on sorbent media while the sample matrix, air or water, is discarded. In much the same way as a vacuum cleaner filters dust from air as it sweeps over a surface, thermal desorption instruments capture compounds of interest on adsorbent material packed in cartridges. Collected compounds are then introduced into another analytical instrument, typically a gas chromatograph, where they are separated, measured, and identified.

Please submit at least 1 milliliter of sample or at least 5 milligrams of material for analysis unless otherwise specified. Submit sample is a sealed container so as to limit volatile loss or sample contamination.

Differential scanning calorimetry or DSC is a thermoanalytical technique in which the difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a sample and reference is measured as a function of temperature. Both the sample and reference are maintained at nearly the same temperature throughout the experiment. Generally, the temperature program for a DSC analysis is designed such that the sample holder temperature increases linearly as a function of time. The reference sample should have a well-defined heat capacity over the range of temperatures to be scanned.

Differential scanning calorimetry can be used to measure a number of characteristic properties of a sample. Using this technique, it is possible to observe fusion and crystallization events as well as glass transition temperatures Tg. DSC can also be used to study oxidation, as well as other chemical reactions.

Please submit at least 0.5 grams of sample for analysis. If this requirement cannot be met, please provide the mass you would like analyzed in your request. Sample turnaround time is usually 5 business days unless otherwise specified.

Thermogravimetric analysis or (TGA) is a method of thermal analysis in which changes in physical and chemical properties of materials are measured as a function of increasing temperature (with constant heating rate), or as a function of time (with constant temperature and/or constant mass loss). TGA can provide information about physical phenomena, such as second-order phase transitions, including vaporization, sublimation, absorption, adsorption, and desorption. Likewise, TGA can provide information about chemical phenomena including chemisorptions, desolvation (especially dehydration), decomposition, and solid-gas reactions (e.g., oxidation or reduction).

Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) monitors sample weight loss caused by volatilization and degradation often as a function of temperature ramping using a high precision balance and furnace. Typical samples include polymers,
epoxies, fibers and laminates for investigating deformulation, thermal stability, or comparative study applications. TGA only measures the mass loss caused by evolved gas events. By coupling TGA with an FTIR, unique spectroscopic data as well as functional group information of the evolved gases may be now obtained.
