Raman spectroscopy is a spectroscopic technique used to observe vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a sample. This technique is often used in chemistry to provide a fingerprint by which unknown molecules can be identified. Raman spectra are also widely used to identify and characterize different types of minerals and gems. The strength of inorganic identification makes Raman spectroscopy a complimentary technique to other methods like x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray.

Raman applications include measuring molecular crystallographic orientation. Samples analyzed by Raman spectroscopy include, proteins, polymers, pharmaceuticals, inorganics, minerals, and many other materials. Solids, liquids, solutions and gases can all be analyzed with confidence.

Raman microscopy is also available, allowing microscopic spot analysis to identify contaminants

Using the in house TA Instruments SDT Q600 unit provides the power of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to provide both phase transitions and weight loss in one analysis. This is an excellent tool for comparing material characteristics and determining physical behavior across a thermal gradient. Typical analysis range for this instrument is from room temperature up to 1400C. Samples are typically solids or semi-solids and a sample size of at least 100mg is required for analysis. Please submit all samples in a sealed container with appropriate hazard or MSDS information if available.

Differential scanning calorimetry or DSC is a thermoanalytical technique in which the difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a sample and reference is measured as a function of temperature. Both the sample and reference are maintained at nearly the same temperature throughout the experiment. Generally, the temperature program for a DSC analysis is designed such that the sample holder temperature increases linearly as a function of time. The reference sample should have a well-defined heat capacity over the range of temperatures to be scanned.

Differential scanning calorimetry can be used to measure a number of characteristic properties of a sample. Using this technique, it is possible to observe fusion and crystallization events as well as glass transition temperatures Tg. DSC can also be used to study oxidation, as well as other chemical reactions.
