Kitware provides a variety of computational image analysis services such as image registration, image segmentation and general image processing. These services are particularly applicable to 2D or 3D medical and biomedical images, such as CT, PET , MRI, Ultrasound, and cell microscopy images.

Kitware is a lead developer and the primary maintainer of the Insight Toolkit (ITK), which has become the industry standard for medical image analysis. We also have created numerous other image analysis software such as IGSTK ( Image-guided Surgery Toolkit), TubeTK (Tube Toolkit for vascular images), LSTK ( Lesion Sizing Toolkit ), and Bender (for voxelized anatomical models ).

Services are rendered by customers uploading the data to be processed, and selecting the data analysis pipelines to be applied to them. Results are then made available for download, and web-based visualization tools are available for reviewing results previous to download.

Kitware's work in bioinformatics has centered on the development of an analysis tool tailored to integrative geneomic, metabolomic, and proteomic studies. Visomics is a user-friendly, web-based application that couples analysis algorithms written in R with state-of-the-art visualizations derived from VTK and Titan. Visomics gathers data from various sources and databases and provides a viewer an interactive tool for gleaning insight from otherwise disorganized data. To further enhance the functionality of Visomics, we have enabled web-based querying for incorporating external web-enabled pathways, such as KEGG, into the analysis.

Creating visual representations of the analysis of such complex data enables researchers to more easily pinpoint and focus on unique or interesting data. Through these visualizations of 'omics data, otherwise obscure patterns become clear and provide insight for some of the leading research challenges.

Kitware has been a pioneer in the area of open-access scientific data management. Midas, our premier data management platform, was created to build applications that handle data management problems across many domains.

Kitware has also been instrumental in launching the Insight Journal as a vehicle for distributing developments in medical image processing. We have also partnered with the Optical Society (OSA) and the National Library of Medicine to develop and launch an Interactive Scientific Publishing (ISP) system. This important milestone in scientific publishing will significantly improve the dissemination of scientific findings and ultimately accelerate scientific inquiry. The Midas Platform has allowed Kitware to build high-impact publishing and data dissemination applications while strengthening the open-source infrastructure and lowering costs for users.
