Each of our models benefits from the same standards: health, genetic stability, one sole microbiota, in breeding conditions assuring animal welfare. Strict breeding conditions to ensure homogeneous research models that guarantee repeatable results for your research over time.

These F1 hybrids are the result of a cross between a C57BL/6JRj female and a SJL/JRj male. F1 hybrids are heterozygous at every locus (provided that the parental strains have different alleles). As is the case with inbred strains, they are genetically and

phenotypically uniform.

F1 hybrids are often used for their hybrid vigour (resistance and acitivity). They are especially interesting as genetic background (vigour and repeatability of genetic inheritance) for harmful phenotype models, for tissue transplantation, to determine mechanisms of inheritance, to create or improve expression of polygenic disease.

It is also used in behavioural studies, radiation, safety and efficacy testing for nutrients, medicine, pathogens or hormones.

129 Inbred Mouse Model

This strain was created at Columbia University in 1928 by Dunn from a crossbreed of coloured stock and chinchilla stock (Tyrc-ch) provided by Castle. In 1948, the strain was brought to the Jackson Laboratory (129/ReJ). In 1953 Stevens took it on and began by studying the genetic basis of testicular teratomas in mice from the 129 parental strain. In order to determine the cellular origin of the teratomas he worked on different crossbreeds of 129 stock. His research work resulted in the creation of the substrains “Steel” and “Ter”.

The 129S2/SvPasOrl strain is a substrain of Steel, resulting from crossbreeding with the C3H-MgfSl-J, followed by 12-14 generations of further crossbreeding with 129/Sv stock. This resulted in mice with agouti pigmentation and white bellies. The steel-J mutation increases the incidence of tertomas by 10%. This strain was brought to Dr J.L. Guenet at the Institut Pasteur in 1970.

The 129 family is made up of 3 sub-families with a significant genetic variation. In order to differentiate these sub-families, the new nomenclature in 1999, completed their code by adding a letter for each strain. As such, the parental substrain is now 129P, the Steel substrain, 129S and the “teratoma” (ter) substrain, 129T.


Main application and research fields: transgenesis, ovarian transplants, production of targeted mutations.

Embryo Transfer

The rederivation (or decontamination) by embryo transfer allows you to obtain SOPF (free of pathogens and some opportunistic microorganisms) animals from infected animals.

Decontamination may be necessary to remove the influence of infectious agents on an experiment. It is also necessary to securely exchange a line with a colleague based on the health status of the respective animal facilities.

Embryo recovery allows us to supply you with mice of your strains from straws of frozen embryos.

It is necessary when you want to restart studies on these strains in controlled genetic and health conditions.

Recovery from frozen embryos is also used to repopulate animal facilities after transfer, construction, or after a long period of storage when the strain was not part of an active study.

Recovery from frozen embryos provides specific and opportunistic pathogen free (SOPF) animals; this technique is used to limit genetic drift and recover the original phenotype of your strain.

Animal Embryo and Sperm Cryopreservation

Cryopreservation is the ideal solution to protect a valuable strain or to store a strain that is not part of an active study.

Cryopreservation of embryos:

JANVIER LABS developed an efficient department for cryopreserving embryos with the vitrification technique. We offer you to cryopreserve embryos of your rodent models with this technique. We also use vitrification to supply frozen embryos of our JANVIER LABS strains at different pre-implantation development stages (see our JANVIER LABS embryo kits).

The cryopreservation of embryos is generally recommended for complex strains and where preservation of the genetic background is required. Indeed, the cryopreserved genetic material will be fully recovered and this technique will freeze the characteristics and prevent genetic drift.

Sperm cryopreservation:

Cryopreservation of strains by sperm is recommended if the strain contains only one or two genetic mutations and is on a common genetic background. The Jackson Laboratory developed a simple, innovative and reliable solution for protecting and storing your strains: the JAX™ Sperm Cryo Kit.

Excision surgery involves complete or partial removal of an organ.

This technique allows the study of the influence of an organ on the physiology of healthy animals or in a diseased animal. Excision surgery is also a method for inducing a disease model such as the 5/6 nephrectomy model of renal failure in rats.

The ligation aims to block a biological flow both in the circulatory system (ligation of a vein, for example) and from organ to organ (ligation of the ureter for example). Ligation is primarily used for the induction of disease models or for the control of reproduction.

CSJLF1 Hybrid Mouse Model

These F1 hybrids are the result of a cross between a BALB/cJRj female and a SJL/JRj male. F1 hybrids are heterozygous at every locus (provided that the parental strains have different alleles). As is the case with inbred strains, they are genetically and phenotypically uniform. They are not as sensitive to environmental factors as their parent strains.

CSJLF1/JRj are more sensitive to EAE* (90-100%) than the parental BALB/c (30%-70%) strain. The mortality rate is higher than 50% one week after disease onset (Cua et al., 1999).

The DBA is the oldest of all inbred strains of mice. Its story begins in 1909 when Dr. CC LITTLE began inbreeding and selecting for coat color. From 1929 until 1930 crosses were made among substrains, and several new strains were established including DBA/1 and DBA/2.

DBA/1 and DBA/2 differ at a large number of loci including the MHC (Major Histocompatibility Complex) H2 Haplotype. This heterozygosity is most likely a result of residual heterozygosity in the strain when the substrains were separated. DBA/1JRj is widely used as a model for rheumatoid arthritis. Immunisation with type-II collagen results in severe autoimmune polyarthritis. The rates of induced arthritis vary depending on chosen protocol but remain inferior to 100%. This collagen-induced arthritis leads to the same complications as in humans; there is synovial inflammation, cartilage and bone erosion. Furthermore, as is the case with humans, the sensitivity is linked to the expression of molecules belong to the MHC H2 haplotype.

DBA/1Rj mice have a moderate sensitivity to the development of atherosclerotic lesions of the aorta following an atherogenic diet. Old breeders heart and tongue calcification with age. Females can develop mammary carcinomas.

Important notice: This strain is homozygous for the Cdh23ahl mutation which leads to age-related hearing loss. Its expression on a DBA/1 background results in progressive hearing loss with onset after 10 months of age.

The DBA is the oldest of all inbred strains of mice. Its story begins in 1909 when Dr. CC LITTLE began inbreeding and selecting for coat color. From 1929 until 1930 crosses were made among substrains, and several new strains were established including DBA/1 and DBA/2.

DBA/2J are not very sensitive to the development of atherosclerotic lesions of the aorta even following a 14-week atherogenic diet. It shows hearing loss of high frequencies starting at weaning (3-4 weeks); this hearing loss becomes severe by 2-3 months of age. This strain has 3 recessive alleles responsible for this progressive cochlear pathology that starts by affecting the organ of Corti. A decrease in volume of the anteroventral nucleus of the cochlea and the parallel loss of neurons lead to a progressive decrease of peripheral hearing.

Young DBA/2J inbred mice are susceptible to audiogenic seizures due to the asp2 mutation; however, this susceptibility decreases as animals reach adulthood. This strain also presents high rates of calcareous pericarditis, calcified lesions of the testicles, tongue and muscles.

Important notice: This strain is homozygous for the Cdh23ahl mutation which leads to age-related hearing loss. Its expression on a DBA/2 background results in progressive hearing loss with onset after 3 months of age. There is no GpnmbR150X (responsible for the iris dispersion) in our DBA/2JRj strain. This mutation first appeared in the 1980’s. JANVIER LABS acquired the strain from the Zentralinstitutfuer Versuchstierzucht in Hanover. They in turn held it from The Jackson Laboratory in 1980. Animals transferred then were not carrying the mutation. The Ptprcb (= Ly5b or CD45.2) (protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type c, b variant) recessive allele on chromosome 1 is present in this strain.

Professor AHARONI collected the first hamster litter in 1930 during a zoological expedition to Syria, in order to find suitable hamsters for the study of Leishmaniosis. He gave them to Mr BEN MANACHEN, from Hebrew University, Jerusalem who bred them. ALDER started experiments on golden hamster in 1930. He distributed the animals in France and the UK. Later, some breeders were sent to the USA, Egypt and India. 

Its head has two prominent black eyes and two small round ears. Its tail is just a short furry appendage. The hamster has cheek pouches, in which it can store considerable amounts of sustenance.

They are used in experimental tumour growth, metabolism studies, nutrition and caries studies. This model is also used in infectious and cardiovascular disease studies. It is also the only lab animal that can hibernate.

On a NOD background, antigen-presenting cells’ (APC), myeloid cells’ and the NK cell functions are impaired. Most homozygotes do not have any detectable IgM, IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, IgG3, or IgA.

Some NOD-prkdcscid mice can become “leaky” from the spontaneous development of functional T and B lymphocytes. The presence of the prkdcscid mutation does not allow for the phonotypical expression of the type I diabetes that characterizes the NOD background (Non Obese Diabetic).  

NOD SCID mice survive under SOPF conditions for 8 to 9 months (before the development of thymic lymphoma).

C3H Inbred Mouse Model

The C3H strain was developed by STRONG in 1920 from a cross of BAGG ALBINO female with DBA male. It was selected for a high incidence of mammary tumours. This sensitivity to mammary tumours is due to an exogenous virus transmitted by the mother’s milk (the Mouse Mammary Tumour Virus – MMTV). In 1930, STRONG sent a colony to ANDERVONT who in turn sent one to HESTON (at generation F35). HESTON stock was then transferred to the NIH in 1951 (generation F51). C3H/HeN mice are used in a wide range of studies. They are homozygous for the Pde6brd1 allele and have an early onset severe retinal degeneration that causes blindness at weaning age.

This strain has a high incidence of hepatoma. Even if MMTV is not present, virgin and breeding females can develop mammary tumours. Despite an atherogenic diet, C3H/HeN mice do not develop aortic atherosclerosis, in contrast to the C57BL/6J. There is a genetically mediated difference between the C3H/HeN and the C3H/HeJ regarding their response to bacterial endotoxin (LPS). This response is linked to the TL4 protein (Toll-like receptor 4; previously lps). C3H/HeN are Tlr4lps-n (toll-like receptor 4; normal LPS response), previously LPSn. This strain will have a normal response to an LPS challenge, it is said to be endotoxin-sensitive. Per contra, the C3H/HeJ strain is Tlr4lps-d, previously LPSn and said to be endotoxin-resistant.

Important: This strain no longer carries MMTV (Mouse Mammary  Tumour Virus).

C57BL/6JRj can show alopecia of uncertain etiology: it could have behavioural causes – overgrooming/barbering (JAX® Notes, 1987, Sundberg et al., 2011) – or behaviour similar to human compulsive hair pulling (Garner et al., 2004).

Inbred mice: BALB/cJRj or BALB/cByJRj or BALB/cAnNRj

These F1 hybrids are the result of a cross between a C57BL/6JRj female and a DBA/2JRj male. F1 hybrids are heterozygous for B6 and D2 alleles at every locus (provided that the parental strains have different alleles).

The strain was selected by MacDowell from a stock of outbred albino mice then transferred to Snell (The Jackson Laboratory) at F26 in 1935. The “c” was added to the strain name by Dr Snell to indicate that the genotype for the colour locus is c/c, hence the name BALB/c. 1935: From Dr Snell to Drs Heston and Andervont (NIH), separation of the BALB/cJ and BALB/cByJ strains at the F38 generation, when some of Dr Snell’s BALB/cSn mice were transferred to Drs Andervont and Heston. 1974: Breeders were transferred to the Production Department of The Jackson Laboratory at F136 and the J was added.

The first nude mouse appeared in an outbred albino mouse stock at the Ruchill Hospital, Glasgow in 1962. This mutation was transferred to the stabilized genetic background of the inbred BALB/cAnN mouse by backcrossing. The genetic background was selected by MacDowell in 1923 from a stock of outbred albino mice obtained by Bagg in 1913. They were transferred to Snell at F32.

This mutation, identified by Dr. GRIST, is an autosomal recessive one and arises in the Foxn1 (forkhead box N1) gene (chromosome 11). It causes thymic aplasia which results in immunodeficiency.

This results in a lack of T cells, B cells remain. This mutation also leads to a keratinisation defect of the hair

follicule and the epidermis. This results in mice with transient downy hair. When this duvet is gone, mice appear nude.

There is no link between the presence of down and immunodeficiency severity.

The first nude mouse appeared in in a closed but not deliberately inbred albino stock at the Ruchill Hospital, Glasgow in 1962. Dr. RYGGARD decided to use the NMRI outbred strain as the background (better viability and fertility).

This mutation, identified by Dr. GRIST, is an autosomal recessive one and arises in the Foxn1 (forkhead box N1) gene (chromosome 11). It causes thymic aplasia which results in immunodeficiency. This results in a lack of T cells, B cells remain.

The athymic nude mouse is a laboratory mouse originating from a strain presenting a natural genetic mutation causing a total or partial absence of the thymus, a characteristic accompanied by a deficient immune system due to a reduced number of produced T lymphocytes. The three main defects of the homozygous mice for the spontanous mutation “nude” are an abnormal growth of hair, a defective development of the thymic epithelium and a lack of immunity. Even though the mice seem hairless, they are born with follicles for the growth of hair partially defective. The growth cycles and models of the hair are evident, in particular in case of pigmented mice, but the defective follicles don’t allow the hair to grow correctly during the entire cycle. The phenotype of the athymic nude model is characterized by the absence of hair, which gave it the “nude” name. The gene responsible for the mutation has been categorised as being a member of the Fox gene family and the nomenclature recommends the denomination Foxn1nu/nu.

The athymic nude mouse is obtained by fixing the gene Foxn1nu/nu on a genetic BALB/cAnNRj background and by proceeding with the breeding of this new strain in outbreeding mode.

The animal has either no thymus (total absence), or, if it is present, it is generally partial and not functional. The mouse is unable to produce T lymphocytes and is therefore immunodeficient. It suffers from a lack of cell-mediated immunity: the nude homozygous mice presents a partial defect in the development of B cells. Because of a defect in the activity of lymphocytes T helper, the response to thymus-dependent antigens are, when detectable, mostly limited to lgM.

The athymic nude mouse is precious for research, because it can receive different tissue or tumour transplants without rejecting them. These xenografts are often used in research to test new methods of imaging or anti-tumour treatments.

CHARACTERISTICS

The nude homozygous females are not efficient breeders. The ovulation starts late at 2,5 months and ends early at 4 months.

The rnu mutation was discovered in 1953 in a HOODED rat colony at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland. This natural genetic mutation causes in the rat an absence of the thymus. In the rare cases where vestiges of thymus remain visible, it is generally not functional. This character is accompanied by a deficient immune system due to insufficient production of T lymphocytes cells. The last characteristic controlled by the rnu gene is abnormal growth of hair which ultimately results in bare or almost naked skin (sometimes retarded hair grow can be observed). The phenotype of the model ATHYMIC nude is characterized by an absence of hair, which earned him the “nude” nickname. The gene responsible for the mutation has been categorized as a member of the Fox gene family and the nomenclature recommends the name Foxn1rnu (genotype rnu/rnu).

The ATHYMIC rat or ATHYMIC nude rat in JANVIER Labs was obtained by fixing the Foxn1rnu gene starting from the LOU Nude strain (LOU/MRj-Foxn1rnu/rnu) on a LOU-FISCHER mixed genetic background using the speed congenics technique, until obtain a 75 % FISCHER background (F344/HanZtmRj). Subsequently the strain obtained is raised as inbred, while taking into account the transmission characteristic of the rnu gene.

The ATHYMIC Nude rat is valuable for research because it can serve as a recipient for different autologous and heterologous tumour cell strain implantations, for example in oncology research.

CHARACTERISTICS

Females with the homozygous gene are not effective breeders.

All procedures followed by our laboratory, developed by the JANVIER LABS scientific department, are validated by our ethics committee. The peri-operative care is adapted to each type of surgery and the operated animals are subject to optimal transport conditions thanks to our integrated transport department.


Excision surgery involves complete or partial removal of an organ.

This technique allows the study of the influence of an organ on the physiology of healthy animals or in a diseased animal. Excision surgery is also a method for inducing a disease model such as the 5/6 nephrectomy model of renal failure in rats.

The ligation aims to block a biological flow both in the circulatory system (ligation of a vein, for example) and from organ to organ (ligation of the ureter for example). Ligation is primarily used for the induction of disease models or for the control of reproduction.

At JANVIER LABS, we have decided to provide this service in-house in order to reassure ourselves that it is carried out in a manner which meets our expectations. We manage the whole logistics chain from our site to the door of your animal facility.


Our teams are specialised, our delivery drivers are outsourced and our vehicles are specially equipped.

  • All our delivery drivers are trained in biosecurity and animal welfare.
  • We have our own fleet of more than 25 air-conditioned and ventilated lorries, specially equipped for the carriage of laboratory rodents and approved by the veterinary authorities. This very recent fleet enables JANVIER LABS to have very reliable equipment with the latest exhaust emission standards. 
  • Our vehicles systematically use motorways to reduce jolting and journey times for the animals. 
  • We assure a traceability of transport conditions thanks to a temperature recorder. 
  • Our teams of drivers are based in different areas in Europe in order to ensure that our rodents’ journeys take place in one go without stopping throughout Europe. This policy enables us to respect our teams’ working hours while reducing the animals’ transport time.

Rodent Rederivation

The rederivation (or decontamination) by embryo transfer allows you to obtain SOPF (free of pathogens and some opportunistic microorganisms) animals from infected animals.

Decontamination may be necessary to remove the influence of infectious agents on an experiment. It is also necessary to securely exchange a line with a colleague based on the health status of the respective animal facilities.

Rodent in vitro Fertilization

Assisted reproduction means the use of clinical and biological practices allowing “In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)”, embryo transfer and artificial insemination, as well as any other technique with an equivalent effect allowing the procreation outside the natural process.


Rapid colony expansion means producing in a single step as many animals as wanted carrying the genetic modification of the strain.

This is made possible through the use of in vitro fertilisation using a male from the strain and wild type female eggs from donors.


Since the number of females is not limited, it is possible to obtain, in a mastered quantity, a batch of homogeneous animals as regards age, sex and genotype. The animals obtained will be SOPF ensuring a simultaneous rederivation.

The rapid colony expansion provides animals quickly and directly available for experimentation or to start a colony (the use of female wild types implicates a first generation of heterozygous for the transgene).

The rapid colony expansion is also useful for lines with early mortality of individuals (e.g., neuromuscular disease).
