Immunohistochemistry (IHC) Core

New York, New York

The Immunohistochemistry Core Laboratory, a component of the Experimental Pathology Shared Resource, is currently located on the NYULMC main campus in the Smilow Research Building. For Histopathology Core services, such as H&E staining, please visit our sister lab here: https://www.scienceexchange.com/facilities/histopathology-core

The IHC laboratory provides guidance and support for the design and execution of experiments involving histopathology and chromogenic or immunofluorescence immunohistochemistry of human and animal tissues and cells. In collaboration with other components of the Experimental Pathology Shared Resource, the IHC core provides guidance for routine and advanced histopathologic services for cells and tissue specimens, and guidance and expertise for special and routine histochemical staining.

The laboratory serves as immunohistochemical repository with a catalog of over 1200 antibodies. The majority of these antibodies are available for the collection of preliminary or more comprehensive data. In addition, many of these antibodies have been tested in both human and animal tissues, and can be used on any of the laboratories two exisiting Ventana NEXes, or on either Discovery and or Discovery XT automated immunohistochemical staining instruments.

The laboratory optimizes and validates new (commercial or proprietary) antibodies that have not been tested by immunohistochemistry. The laboratory uses both human and animal tissue micro/macro arrays, and can employ a wide variety of antigen retrieval methods to determine the applicability of an antibody to immunohistochemical labeling of fresh, frozen or paraffin embedded cells and tissues. Results can be imaged for immediate review and fast turn around.

The laboratory also prepares human and anaimal Tissue Microarrays using a Pathology Devices semi-automated TMA instrument.

The laboratory faculty and staff are available to provide hands-on formal training, as well as provide consulting for the design and execution of experiments involving histopathology and immunohistochemistry of human and animal cells and tissues. The staff can also assist investigators with routine and advanced histopathologic services for tissue and cell specimens (including guidance on initial processing steps: grossing/tissue preparation, processing, embedding, paraffin/frozen microtomy) for samples destined for histopathological interpretation and analysis.
