Explora BioLabs is an AAALAC-accredited preclinical contract research organization (CRO) that provides high quality scientific services and rental vivarium facilities to the biotech industry and leading academic researchers.
Founded in 2004, the company now manages over 40,000 square feet of vivarium and laboratory space, housed in four facilities in prime locations throughout San Diego. We will be expanding to the Bay Area in 2017.
Explora’s reputation for high-quality science and professional service has helped garner clients from throughout North America and Europe. In Southern California alone, Explora has performed research studies for more than 70 biotech companies and non-profit institutions.
Explora currently provides full-service vivarium space to more than 30 clients, and manages in-house vivaria for several other companies.
Explora’s areas of expertise include oncology, diabetes/obesity, infectious diseases, wound healing, PK/toxicity, customized model development, and many others. Explora’s studies start with extensive discussions with sponsor scientists regarding study design, timeline and cost, and end with a high-quality, detailed report of all findings.
Studies using Explora’s services regularly feature in scientific publications, IND filings, and presentations to investors, and in many cases have been key to obtaining funding or advancing a compound into the clinic.
With a PhD-level management team, experienced research scientists, and a professional husbandry staff, Explora has both the expertise and personnel needed to assist with projects of any scale.
Explora’s senior management has decades of industry experience in cancer drug development. Our scientists routinely conduct contract research using xenograft models for industry as well as academic scientists. We also maintain rigorous cell culture procedures to ensure consistency in the quality of our cell lines.

Explora BioLabs operates 4 in vivo pharmacology research rental vivarium facilities in San Diego that are available for use by biotech, pharma and academic institutions. In late 2016, Explora will begin expanding our pharmacology incubators to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our research facilities feature state-of-the-art equipment and caging systems and are staffed by well-trained and friendly personnel. In our vivarium, our professional staff takes care of all aspects of the operation of the facility, including:
Daily animal health check and husbandry service
Daily cleaning of facility
Routine cage change
Animal ordering and receiving
Waste management (including BSL-2 and hazardous waste)
Health and safety compliance
Routine veterinary care
Animal welfare compliance
Pharmacokinetic (PK) studies are a key aspect of the drug development process. Knowing how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes and eliminates drugs helps guide the dosing regimen to maximize efficacy and avoid undesirable effects. Explora has established protocols to handle a wide array of PK study designs. Our goal is to achieve rapid turnaround with quality results for a reasonable cost.
Explora’s research team has:
Extensive experience in drug discovery and development
Expertise with both small molecules and biologics
Excellent technical capabilities
Established IACUC protocols for PK studies in small animals
State radiation license
We can assist with:
Pharmacokinetic and biodistribution studies in small animals
Custom study design
On-site technical support and training

Study Design can include the following:
Bioanalysis:
Explora has established strong working relationships with reputable bioanalytical companies to efficiently process and analyze samples from our PK studies. We can manage the entire study from drug to report, with a rapid turnaround time and high quality results.
Cancer Xenograft Efficacy Models
Explora has experience with many oncology animal models used to test anti-cancer therapies, including Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models from multiple sources.
Obtaining high quality non-GLP toxicology data in the early stages of developing a new drug is a critical and cost-effective step in guiding a subsequent GLP toxicology program.

Assessments
Explora BioLabs offers rodent models for wound healing studies. These mouse and rat full thickness excisional dermal models are commonly used to assess dermal wound healing processes, including granulation, tissue deposition, re-epithelialization and angiogenesis.
Dermal wound healing studies can be performed in normal healthy animals, as well as in animals with impaired wound healing. Impaired would healing models include diabetic animals, such as db/db mice. In addition, agents such as steroids can be used to delay the wound healing process.

Genetic Models:
Many genetic changes can cause obesity and diabetic phenotypes. Several commercially available models are commonly used in diabetes/obesity research:
Non-Genetic Models:
Experimental procedures can be used to produce animals with obesity and diabetic phenotypes. The following models, which can be produced by Explora, are commonly used in diabetes research:
Assays and Endpoints
While many therapeutics have acute effects, others achieve their full effects after chronic treatment. Explora can help you design protocols that yield high-quality, meaningful data from every study. Common assays used in diabetes studies include:
