Explora BioLabs is an AAALAC-accredited preclinical contract research organization (CRO) that provides high quality scientific services and rental vivarium facilities to the biotech industry and leading academic researchers.

Founded in 2004, the company now manages over 40,000 square feet of vivarium and laboratory space, housed in four facilities in prime locations throughout San Diego. We will be expanding to the Bay Area in 2017.

Explora’s reputation for high-quality science and professional service has helped garner clients from throughout North America and Europe. In Southern California alone, Explora has performed research studies for more than 70 biotech companies and non-profit institutions.

Explora currently provides full-service vivarium space to more than 30 clients, and manages in-house vivaria for several other companies.

Explora’s areas of expertise include oncology, diabetes/obesity, infectious diseases, wound healing, PK/toxicity, customized model development, and many others. Explora’s studies start with extensive discussions with sponsor scientists regarding study design, timeline and cost, and end with a high-quality, detailed report of all findings.

Cancer Xenograft Efficacy Models

Explora has experience with many oncology animal models used to test anti-cancer therapies, including the following:

  • Subcutaneous xenograft models (usually human tumors or cell lines transplanted into immuno-compromised rodents).
  • NCI-60 cancer cell lines (over 45 lines characterized in-house for tumorigenicity)
  • Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models from multiple sources

  • Orthotopic tumor models, which are cells implanted directly into organs of interest.

Explora BioLabs offers rodent models for wound healing studies. These mouse and rat full thickness excisional dermal models are commonly used to assess dermal wound healing processes, including granulation, tissue deposition, re-epithelialization and angiogenesis.

Dermal wound healing studies can be performed in normal healthy animals, as well as in animals with impaired wound healing. Impaired would healing models include diabetic animals, such as db/db mice. In addition, agents such as steroids can be used to delay the wound healing process.

Genetic Models:

Many genetic changes can cause obesity and diabetic phenotypes. Several commercially available models are commonly used in diabetes/obesity research:

Non-Genetic Models:

Experimental procedures can be used to produce animals with obesity and diabetic phenotypes. The following models, which can be produced by Explora, are commonly used in diabetes research:
