DNV GL’s BEST Test & Commercialization Center (BEST T&CC) helps promote a clean energy society through innovative battery and energy storage technology (BEST). Located at Rochester, New York, it is the result of a collaboration with the New York BEST Consortium. The centre’s unique capabilities help bring emerging technologies to the commercial market and offer companies essential product testing and qualification at a reasonable cost.
The BEST T&CC brings together over 250 years of combined DNV GL and NY BEST team experience, including electrical testing of T&D equipment, battery and energy storage R&D, consultancy and testing. This allows us to provide unequalled, strictly independent and impartial performance testing in the lab and in the field.
The BEST T&CC is a unique asset for anyone involved in developing and commercialising new battery and energy storage solutions. It gives you access to high-quality testing facilities without burdening your own labs or having to make large capital investments. Moreover, by drawing on the in-depth know-how of our expert staff, you can speed up testing and hence technology development.
BEST T&CC’s unique capabilities allow testing of the complete range of battery and energy storage technologies: from single cells to complete systems with cycle capacities up to 240 kW. Systems up to 2 MW can be tested in conjunction with the KEMA Powertest lab in Chalfont, Pennsylvania.

When new technologies are seeking investment they require validation. DNV GL offers advisory services including design review, which can be used to verify or estimate costs, assess the feasibility of new technology, or provide opinion on performance or functionality.
New technologies in search of investment or financing are often subject to extensive due dilligence. DNV GL can provide 3rd party support to these activities with testing and performance verification, and can also provide modeling to estimate the economic value of system performance in its intended application. Lab data can be used to support economic models in this case.
DNV GL has the facilities to connect battery energy storage systems and serve as the factory acceptance test site.
DNV GL can create testing programs and validation advisory services to demonstrate new technology and provide third-party verification of claimed performance.
DNV GL has controlled temperature chambers where calendar fade over time, cycling fade, or both can be studied in detail. DNV GL uses PEC and Bitrode cyclers.
DNV GL has advanced facilities to test batteries under abuse conditions, including testing of current interrupt devices, overcharge to failure, and overtemperature.
DNV GL performs standard and non-standard battery cycling tests and has worked with Li-ion, Pb acid, NiMH, and emerging technologies such as Zn-air. Testing can be performed according to a standard or protocol or can be custom-made per customer request.
