We act as a catalyst bringing together academia, businesses, government and investors to translate bright ideas and research into the marketplace. We do this by connecting our customers with the right experts, equipment, facilities, networks, funding and more – joining the dots for effective innovation. We are a leading independent technology innovation centre and a founding member of the UK Government’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

The techniques we employ focus on the safe-handling, optimised dispersion and structuring of graphene and other 2D materials into liquids and polymer substrates, and their application into prototype products – all supported by characterisation and application testing. The wide range of characterisation techniques on offer allow our customers to gain a deeper understanding of the chemical and electrical properties of their nanomaterials.

Printed electronics describes a technology that enables electronic circuits to be printed on to a wide range of flexible or free form materials and substrates. It enables electronic functionality to be added where using rigid electronics would be difficult. This provides a whole series of design opportunities that will lead to the creation of a range of future electronic applications across a number of markets.

We have over fifteen years’ experience developing functional printed electronic devices over a broad range of technologies from thin film transistors for display backplanes, to flexible sensor systems and large area electromagnetic detection arrays. By utilising our world-class facilities for scale up and commercialisation, we help you manufacture printed electronics components and devices for feasibility, prototyping and up-to market seeding volumes.

We have the expertise and facilities to fully develop your fermentation and associated downstream processing (DSP). Employing our extensive industry knowledge, we will optimise feedstock and fermentation parameters to efficiently progress from laboratory into pilot or demonstration facilities.

DSP can account for up to 70% of the cost of an industrial bioprocess. At CPI, we ensure DSP issues are considered from the outset, alongside organism and fermentation development. Utilising our new £1Mscale-down facility, we ensure optimal and scalable unit operations are employed to isolate and purify the target compound. 

We offer significant support for your analytical method development and testing requirements, adopting industry standard analytical methods for product and process characterisation. Additionally, within CPI, we can also offer extensive formulation expertise and analysis capability, ensuring the final product is fit-for-purpose for market entry.

It requires specific capabilities, in comparison to conventional fermentation, as these gases need specialised equipment and handling due to their toxicity and/​or flammability. Having invested extensively in C1 gas fermentation capability at laboratory and pilot scale, we are uniquely skilled in the design, development and validation of fermentation processes using gaseous C1feedstocks at all scales of development.
