The Clinical Research and Trials Unit was built in 2010 and is a purpose-built facility located in Wollongong, NSW. The CRTU is distinctive in that it draws directly from the local community, complemented by GP referral pathways, to engage trial participants.
The CRTU is designed for a broad range of studies, particularly involving:
later-stage (Phase II, III or IV) pharmaceutical-sponsored drug trials involving patient populations in most therapeutic areas, particularly in the lifestyle-related conditions such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, smoking cessation and the treatment of diabetes
investigator-initiated studies with community populations involving nutrition, exercise and psychological interventions.
Nine patient examination/consultation rooms
Three large activity rooms (100m2 each) suitable for physical activity trials, including resistance and cardiovascular training equipment
Blood collection and observation clinic with accredited venepuncturist for blood collection and cannulation
Base line monitoring equipment
Pre analytical laboratory for specimen processing
Secure storage for data and clinical trial consumables
Psychological consultation room
Commercial kitchen and servery for dietary intervention trials
Secure pharmacy and drug storage, including pharmacy/vaccine fridge
Alarmed and 24/7 monitored -80 freezers
CPR and emergency equipment with accredited advanced life support (ALS) staff
