Babraham Institute Enterprise Limited (BIE) is the wholly-owned trading arm of the Babraham Institute. The Babraham Institute undertakes innovative life-sciences research to discover the molecular mechanisms that underlie normal cellular processes and functions, with the aim of improving lifelong wellbeing and healthy ageing. It is based on the Babraham Research Campus near Cambridge, which is also home to early-stage biomedical companies.
The Institute aims to maximise the impact of its research through knowledge exchange and commercialisation, and its scientists work with other organisations to translate that research into action for social and economic benefit. BIE supports the delivery of the commercialisation of the Babraham Institute's science. As part of this role, it manages, develops and commercialises the Babraham Institute's intellectual property portfolio. It also facilitates collaborations between the Institute and industry, and arranges access to the Institute's expertise and scientific facilities and services.
The Bioinformatics Group provides a central resource of expertise in computational biology and statistics, available to all researchers in the Institute. The Group has experience in a wide variety of existing software packages for bioinformatics, and also have the ability to write custom programs for specific purposes, if nothing suitable currently exists.
The Group is centrally located and operates on an 'open-door' basis and also provides in-house training courses such as 'Exploring the Ensembl genome databases' and 'A quick introduction to the Staden package'. The Group maintains a suite of bioinformatics desktop packages for PC and Mac users. A central Linux facility provides both a general and Bioinformatics application service.
