The facility’s strengths include lab-on-a-chip technology, micro/nanofluidics, advanced sensing, functional coatings, and separation science. Surface structures and patterns, channel designs, and chemical functionality can be tailored to your needs, through access or partnership with the professional staff. The facility houses state-of-the-art photolithography, micromachining, hot embossing and bonding, micro-injection moulding, plasma etching, thin film coating, fluidic simulation, and advanced characterisation in ISO Class 5 & 6 clean room environments. The NLD-570 deep reactive ion etcher (DRIE - ULVAC NLD570) is capable of deep etching features from the nano to the micron scale and is specifically designed for research and prototyping environments.

The NLD system consists of a process chamber with three electromagnetic coils and the RF antenna is concentrically located with the middle coil. The plasma intensity is confined to the plane of the middle coil and the diameter of the plasma is proportional to the electromagnet current. This enables the etching process to provide an extremely high uniformity and the etching capabilities are specifically tuned for glass - quartz and pyrex. This makes the process suitable for use in microfluidics, lab-on-chip, microlens, etc.

It can etch 4 inch diameter glass or semiconductor wafers.

Hot embossing microfluidc devices or other features in polymers is a well accepted process and widely adopted. It's considered a robust process for the manufacture of polymer microfluidic devices.
It can emboss substrated up to 6 inch diameter

The HHV/Edwards TF500 sputter coater is a front-loading deposition system with a chamber able to accommodate up to 6 inch diameter substrates. The system is fitted with three sputter sources with a switching system which allows users to select operation from DC or RF power supplies.

Multilayer deposition can be performed without breaking vacuum and the pumping system has a ceal room compatible dry pump with a turbo molecular pump.

It can deposit both metals (eg Au, Cr, Mo, Ti), and non-metals (TiO2, ITO) on wafers up to 6 inch in diameter.
