Advanced BioScience Laboratories

Rockville, Maryland, US

Advanced BioScience Laboratories, Inc (ABL) is a leading contract research and manufacturing organization, partnering with our clients to advance their vaccine and therapeutic development programs. Our unique combination of preclinical and clinical services provide the tools to address the scientific challenges encountered during any stage of product development. For preclinical studies, we utilize immunological, molecular, and cell-based assay platforms for candidate selection. We offer proof-of-concept in vivo studies with preclinical immunomonitoring and efficacy and potency testing. Once a clinical candidate is identified, ABL's in-house cGMP suites are designed for single-use technologies accommodating a wide range of products, including mammalian- and microbial-based protein therapeutics as well as viral vectors and vaccines.

ABL's animal facility is USDA-registered and is accredited by the American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), an association widely recognized for its standards of excellence in laboratory animal care. As an accredited organization, ABL complies with all policies of the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals," DHHS (NIH 85-23), Animal Welfare (DHHS-TN 73-2) the NIH Manual Issuance 4206 and 6000-3-4-58, "Responsibility for Care and Use of Animals CDC/NIH 4th edition”, “Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories,” and Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. ABL has a Category 1 assurance from OLAW of the Public Health Service.

Non human primates:
ABL has been performing vital non human primate (NHP) studies for government and commercial clients for over 30 years. We have a wealth of experience and capabilties to help clients answer their research questions and aid with candidate selection. We regularly perform both small and large client studies and are able to peform the necessary animal manipulations along with a majority of the associated Efficacy and Potency Testing. All NHPs go through a rigorous prescreening before they arrive at ABL’s location and are tested again during our mandatory 60-day quarantine to ensure the animals meet the requirements. The testing includes a viral panel (e.g., SIV, SRV, STLV, measles and Herpes B virus) within 30 days prior to shipment to ABL’s animal facility which is preformed again during the quarantine period.

Rodent and Rabbits:
ABL has been performing vital rabbit and rodent studies for government and commercial clients for over 30 years. We have a wealth of experience and capabilties that we are able to bring to bear to help clients answer their research questions and aid with candidate selection. We regularly perform both small and large studies for clients, and are unique in that we are able to not only perform the complex animal manipulations and sample collections but also can do the associated testing and analysis. VIRAL ANTIGENS AND PROTEINS
ABL has the capability to produce highly pure native envelope and gag HIV-1 and SIV antigens. These native proteins are purified from the conditioned media of chronically infected Human T-cell lines using immunoaffinity chromatography. They are purified by reverse phase chromatography resulting in purities greater than 95%. In addition, we offer a biologically active recombinant HIV-1 Tat protein which is produced in E. coli and purified using heparin sepharose and reverse phase chromatography. Tat is greater than 95% pure and biologically active by an HIV-1 rescue assay.

ABL has developed high affinity murine monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) against numerous retroviral proteins, including the envelope proteins gp120 and gp160. These antibodies are purified from ascites fluid or the conditioned media from hybridoma cultures using protein A sepharose. The resulting Mabs are highly reactive and specific.
